One morning, before things stopped being novel, I grabbed the camera and walked up and down the beach taking a couple rolls along the way.

Cartagena is a wonderful coastal city. It has a lot to offer, the weather is magnificent - hot as the dickens with a sun that penetrates your very soul, so bring the 45SPF - beautiful architecture, and lots of day trips to islands, snorkeling, etc.
In terms of being a Colombian city, Cartagena is very safe; the idiocy of the guerrilla does not extend to this area.
